1.- Personal charisma, a particular self confidence that allowed him to meet the most important rulers in Europe, convince the Spanish Catholic Monarchs of the feasibility of his plan, and even to grant him extraordinary concessions, such as the title of “Admiral of the Ocean Sea”, and of course convinced his men to follow him against reason.
2.- Faith, a completely unwavering yet misguided faith in his plans, which was supported only by scripture he cherry picked, and completely unsupported by the available scholarly evidence of the time.
