Being at a tender age them also had suffered a lot.
Even they also would work hard with full determination rather than giving up.
Though Nicola and Jacopo are two young boys the narrator addresses them as two gentlemen.
On the other hand, they are rough and tough boys who are ready to face the hardships of life.

Even though both the boys are shabby in their appearance, they had a seriousness in their eyes which were far beyond their age. They were self respective and solved their problems by themselves.
They did wish for the sympathy of others and did not want to disclose their problems. They worked hard to earn money so that they could pay for the treatment of their sister who was suffering from tuberculosis in the spine.
At that age they sacrificed their needs for the sake of their sister and immensely loved her.
ALL these made the narrator call the two boys Nicolas and Jacopo two gentlemen!
