Question:

What quantity (in ml) of a 45% acid solution of a mono-protic strong acid must be mixed with a 20% solution of the same acid to produce 800 ml of a 29.875% acid solution ?

Solution:

Let volume of 1st solution = Vml

Then, Volume of 2nd solution = (800–V) mL

We know,

Amount of acid in 1st solution + Amount of acid in 2nd solution = Amount of acid in obtained solution.

45V/100 + 20(800-V) / 100 = 29.875(800)/100

On, solving, we obtain the values of V as:

V = 316 ml
