What are Nutrients?
“Nutrients are the compounds in food that provide us with energy that facilitates repair and growth and helps to carry out different life processes.”
In general, there are two types of nutrients:
- Macronutrients
- Micronutrients

There are three macronutrients required by humans: carbohydrates (sugar), lipids (fats), and proteins. Each of these macronutrients provides energy in the form of calories.

Micronutrients
Micronutrients are substances required by the body in order to facilitate normal bodily functioning. In an overview, they are crucial for the production of enzymes, hormones and other substances that are key for key processes within the body (World Health Organisation). The two major micronutrients are vitamins and minerals.

- Micronutrients are the elements required by us in small quantities. Iron, cobalt, chromium, iodine, copper, zinc, molybdenum are some of the micronutrients.
