Mitosis results in two nuclei that are identical to the original nucleus. Meiosis, on the other hand, results in four nuclei that each has ½ the chromosomes of the original cell. In animals, meiosis only occurs in the cells that give rise to the sex cells (gametes), i.e., the egg and the sperm.

1. Mitosis is the equational division whereas meiosis is the reductional division.

2. Mitosis produces two daughter cells whereas meiosis produces four daughter cells.

3. Prophase of mitosis is shorter whereas Prophase of meiosis is longer phase.

4. Mitosis takes place in somatic cell whereas Meiosis takes place in germ cell.
