First What Is Slip Ring?
✏A slip ring is an electromechanical device that allows the transmission of power and electrical signals from a stationary to a rotating structure. A slip ring can be used in any electromechanical system that requires rotation while transmitting power or signals.
✏The Rings in a commutator in either a motor or generator is what carries electricity either in or out of the Armature. The reason the DC generator or motor has split Rings instead of slip Rings is very simple the magnetic field in the Armature has to change every 180 degrees in order to maintain a DC response either ingoing or outgoing. In an AC system slip rings are used and that is how the current is alternating because the Armature is magnetism stays the same all the time
✏An alternator can be AC as well as DC.
For a DC alternator the slip rings actually reverses the polarity so that you get a DC output at the load.
In case of AC it serves in a different way. As per faraday law you need a relative motion bw magnetic field and conductor. Hence the motion will be invariably achieved by rotating the rotor. But for smaller AC machines the field is fed into the static part (stator) and the rotor holds the armature winding. So for transfering the potential generated in the coils, we need a sliding arrangment which transfer the current from a rotating part to load.
Hence slips rings comes to picture here. A slip ring rotates and carbon brush mounted on it taps the potential and supplies to load.
In case of large machines, the rotor is made as field winding which limits the current through slip rings and reduces the associated losses. Hence, for larger machines slip rings serves as input for field winding.

- The function of slip ring in an AC generator is that these are the hollow rings that are connected to the ends of the armature coil. They help in rotation of the coil. Also, they provide electric contact with the brushes.
