Citing anarchy, the Rani offered to manage the district of Jhansi unless the troops were sent by the Britishers. She used this time to strengthen the defence of Jhansi, recruited soldiers and formed alliance with neighbouring rulers. When the British forces came to take control over Jhansi ,she resisted. Despite her vigorous attempt the Rani could not stop the British from breaching the walls and entering the city.A day before the final assault she lashed her 10 year old son from her back and managed to escape. She is said to have jumped on her horse Badal from the fort. (Below is the picture of the said place). She then joined joined Tatia Tope, who was already a leading figure of the revolt of 1857 to attack Gwalior. Jayaji Rao Sindhia was defeated here and the Gwalior fort was captured. On June 16 the British forces closed in on Gwalior. The Rani lead the defence from the front and died fighting like a warrior on June 17,1857
