the rational number:- -4  3/5

the number to be subtracted:- x

the answer:- 3  1/2

TOGETHER:- -4  3/5 - x = 3  1/2 (change the mixed fraction into improper fraction)

-23/5 - x = 7/2

-23/5 = 7/2 + x

-23/5 - 7/2 = x

-23*2/5*2 - 7*5/2*5 = x

-46/10 - 35/10 = x

-46 - 35/10 = x

-81/10 = x

therefore x = -81/10

hope it helps you

have a great day....
