There are two main reasons for the interior layering of the earth – density and gravity.

  • Gravity is a force that attracts a body towards the centre of the earth.
  • Density is mass per unit volume. It determines what will sink and what will float.
  • Before the formation of the planets, the solar system had dust and rocks made up of different minerals which had different densities. All the planets are made from these different minerals or elements with varying densities.
  • As the earth cooled over time, Denser materials, like iron and nickel, sank to the core near the centre of the earth. Lighter materials, like aluminium and silicon, remained closer to the surface of the Earth.
  • Materials with high density sink beneath the ones with low density. The core of the Earth which is the densest of all is the innermost layer of earth. The mantle is less dense and hence it lies above the core and it is the middle layer of earth. The earth’s crust which is the lightest layer is the outermost layer of earth.

Thus, we can say that the interior layering of the earth is shaped by the effects of gravity and density.
