Last wave of annexations occurred under Lord Dalhousie. Who was the governor-general from 1496-1856. He devised a policy that came to be known as Doctrine of Lapse. According to the Doctrine, if a ruler died without a male heir in his kingdom, his kingdom would become part of the company's territory. Many kingdoms was simply annexed by applying this doctrine.
