Governer-General Dalhousie brought the policy of "Doctrine of Lapse".

According to that policy :-

  • If an Indian ruler died without a male heir , then his kingdom would Lapse , meant it would be taken under the British Raj.
  • No adopted son would be seen as king's male heir.
  • Satara, Sambalpur,Udaipur, Jhansi,Nagpur were the kingdoms that lapsed by that doctrine.
