We can answer this question in 3 simple points:

  • Anti-defection law: The constitution was amended to prevent elected MLAs and MP’s from  changing parties. Because many elected representatives indulging in defection in  order to get cash rewards or become ministers. The law now says that if any MP or MLA changes parties he/she will lose the seat in the legislature.

  • Affidavit: An order had been passed by the supreme court to reduce the influence of money and criminal.  In the present time, it is mandatory for every candidate that participates in the elections have to file an affidavit, giving details  of their properties and criminal cases pending against them. The new system has made of information  easily available to the public.

  • The Role of Election Commission: An order was passed by the Election commission that made it necessary for  political parties to hold their organizational elections and file their income tax returns. This initiative has been started by many parties  have but sometimes it is just mere formality.
