There were several ways of creating the illusion of depth. Linear perspective was invented by Brunelleschi during the Renaissance. Single point linear perpective is a point at which all of the lines of perspective converge, usually on the horizon. Chiaroscuro meaning light and dark is also a method involving contrasting highlight and shade to promote the illusion. Ariel perspective was also used to give an impression of distance and thus depth. You can see examples of this in the background of many Renaissance works. Distant views are depicted as becoming more blue and grey in their hues as they disappear into the distance.
