The Indian National Congress in its Lahore session of 1929 which was presided by Jawaharlal Nehru passed the historic "Poorna Swaraj' or total independence resolution. A public proclamation was made by the Congress to celebrate 26th January 1930 as Independence day and accordingly 26th January 1930 was celebrated as first independence day. In order to commemorate the day, India after independence, enforced the Constitution on 26th January 1950 and now the day is being celebrated as Republic day.

The "Declaration of Independence Resolution"  expressed the pain of Indians and highlighted the grievances of India against British rule. The resolution was game changer in Indian freedom struggle. The demand of Indians now shifted from domain status to complete independence. The demand for freedom was made in the language of justice rather than charity. In short, it marked the beginning of a large scale political movement against the British colonial rule.
