  • John Elliott Drinkwater Bethune was born on 18th July, 1801 and died on 12th August, 1851.

  • He was proficient in languages like English, Bengali, Greek, Latin, German and French languages.

  • In 1837, he was appointed as a lawyer advisor in the British Commonwealth office. Later in 1848, he was appointed as the law minister to governor general Lord Canning. After a while, he became the chairman of the council of Education.

  • With his initiative and help of Madan Mohan tarkalankar and Vidyasagar, the Native female school was established with 21 female students on 7th May, 1849. Presently it is called as Bethune school.

  • Later on, he with the help of some other people established the Bethune college which was also formed for women. He had donated his entire wealth for setting up these institutions. He had also established the Female Juvenile society & Calcutta Public Library.

  • Thus, he played a great role in spreading female education in India.
