His contribution to freedom struggle can't be underestimated. He underwent a thorough change as he came in contact with Gandhiji. He gave up his former lavished life style and cemented a tie with Indian people comprising of farmers, labourers, petty businessmen ,students teachers ,freedom fighters and the whole lot of other Indians imbued with typical Indian spirits and temperament .Nehru's Letters written to his daughter give you glimpses not only his sense of history but also his transformed personality and his vision. He contributed immensely as a freedom fighter by lending his unflinching support to Gandhiji under whose leadership India gained its independence. He has left behind him a legacy and it needs a fair evaluation .Nehru like Gandhi,Patel,Maulana Azad and others of their ilk must not evaluated through the scanner of any party.

It is very unfortunate that A person who contributed so much to Pre - Independence and Post - Independence formative years of India derided , perhaps by design , idealogical differences , ignorance , or sheer Political gamesmanship.

He might have made a few mistakes , might have been idealistic .

But by deriding Nehruji , you are not deriding a person ( to suit somebody’s narrow interests ?? ). You are deriding almost a whole generation of dedicated Political leadership , Bureaucracy & Public across the country . Can somebody say that the Political leadership , Bureaucracy and General Public were perhaps any day more knowledgeable , more dedicated to National cause than subsequent generations ,where the bad elements have crept into all walks of life ??

I feel Sardar Patelji and Boseji , with whom lot of comparisons get made , themselves will feel bad about an their esteemed colleague being derided with so much planted hatred , if there alive to see such malice . They might have had some ideological differences , but they also had lot of respect for each other

India was fortunate to have such abundance of dedicated leadership, who were ready to devote their full life for achieving Independence and developing the country further . Each person may have some strengths & may need to be assisted in other areas.

Nehruji was perhaps best suited to be the first Prime Minister , to ensure

making Democracy a reality in practice , esp in the light of the impoverished Nation we inherited from British ,

making India secular, esp in the context of what was expected to follow after Partition

Making Democratic institutions respectable

Visionary Planning for Institutes of Excellence , Science & technology ( Nuclear Science , Space ,DRDO ,CSIR etc)

Solid Foundation for Industrialisation ( Steel,Fertiliser ,Refineries, Power Plants , Ordinance factories etc)

Massive Investments in multi-purpose projects to boost irrigation

Getting Technology , massive aid esp from Russian bloc countries ( west was not willing to part with Technology)

Intellectuals / Experts could freely contribute to the development process

India being recognised on International scene
