What role does albatross play in the poem the rime of ancient Mariner

it plays the major role in the poem...the albatross made the breeze to blow but when the mariner killed it ..the other mariners thought it was a bad thing but when the wind start blowing. again they praised the ancient mariner and at end the guilty feeling that the mariner had.......in all case albatross is the main character thus it play a major role (explain all incidents if u need)
