Swimmers must fight the effects of friction as they push through the water. Friction is a force that reduces the motion of substances that encounter each other. Swimmers encounter frictional drag in water, just as cyclists and runners encounter frictional drag from the air pushing against them.

Friction plays a hugeeee role in swimming, as well as gravity and the water. Friction is the keys source that prevents you from swimming fast, so does the water. As you move trough the water your body rubs agaist it it creates friction. Gravity keeps you under and you create friction while swimming up. The less the swim wear the less the friction, that is why swim stars only wear speed-os and also thats why they shave all the hair on there body's and also the less the hair the less the friction.
