Ponce de Leon was born in Santervas de Campos, Spain
where he started his first exploration. His exploration career began when he joined Christopher Columbus on the second voyage to the New World in 1493. On this voyage he was a gentleman volunteer. This is the first time de Leon set foot on Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. After this voyage de Leon returned to Spain. De Leon was given the assignment to stop the rebellion in Hispaniola, he not only completed this expectation, and he exceeded it. He used the native people in Hispaniola as slaves in the farm fields and as labors in the gold mine. Later, De Leon had heard tales that Puerto Rico was full of riches, so he stated his next expedition to Puerto Rico. Here, he stayed for several years and created another successful gold mining operation. After political issues in Spain, he was forced to return to Spain in 1509. Years later in 1514, he wanted to expand his exploration so he set sail for Florida. In 1521 he returned to Florida with 200 men, ready to dig and find treasure and more lands.
