In his official capacity, he has an expressionless face. He considers Ali, a mad man, a pest who keeps bothering the people at the post office day after day. He shouts at Ali and loses his temper. He doesn't possess any feelings for him.
But as a father, he is very loving and caring. He has no patience, when he doesn't receive a letter from his daughter regarding her illness. He is restless and spends sleepless nights.
That is when he is unable to understand Ali, the coachman and his longing for his daughter. He feels ashamed of his own behaviour. When he comes across the coachman' daughter's letter, as he is waiting for his daughter's, he realises the pain, anguish and suffering of the coachman. He is remorseful and guilty. He repents by placing Miriam's letter at the grave of her father Ali. He realises the universality of a father's love for his daughter.
