The disadvantages of child labor include: susceptibility to abuse, low pay rates, hazardous working conditions and illegal work, such as drug trafficking, child prostitution and human trafficking. Additionally, the educational development of child laborers is often stunted by the limited access to school time and other educational opportunities. According to the ILO conference report of 1996, child labor is the single most important source of child abuse and exploitation.

Child labor is the employment of minors in any labor industry, particularly when it is illegal or exploitative. The ILO defines hazardous child labor as work that by its nature or the circumstances in which it is carried out is likely to harm the health, safety or morals of children. A couple examples include slavery, the use of child soldiers, prostitution and drug trafficking. The effects of these forms of child labor are traumatic, and they include long-term health and psychological problems for the children involved.

The ILO conducted a research in 26 countries, where they discovered that one-quarter of all child laborers suffer injuries or illnesses on the job. In the United States, businesses that employ a large number of child workers tend to generate more occupational injuries than industry average. One of the plausible reasons is that child laborers often work in unskilled types of jobs, which are dangerous and high risk. Since many child laborers come from poor family backgrounds, poverty-related problems, such as general poor health, often aggravate the risks, leading to exponential injury rates among child workers.

Advantages

Children can contribute to family income

A very cruel, yet very common scenario in poor countries is that parents consider their children as a reliable source of income. When rich society faces this cruel reality they simply raise their voice and go against it without any further research. But, believe me, income from children can be huge supportive for poor families. In developing countries, family income always has been below poverty level, and lifestyle has always remained worst and uncomfortable. Moreover, in most cases, weak or sick elder members cannot afford medication, accommodation, food and all other basic human needs. To ease the situation, some income from mature children can have a big impact on family. At least minimum life style can be ensured with that income. Therefore, I am very much in favor of child labor. However, children should work during leisure time and vacations to not hamper their education.

Poor children can work to pay tuition fees

Children from poor families can pay their tuition fees by working during leisure time. Many children in developing countries are involved in different simple jobs. A recent study showed that children have been very effective and successful as a tourist guide, waiter, farmer and many other simple tasks. The surprising fact is that they are also doing well in exams and other extra-curricular activities. Their small work-load is not hampering their education. Therefore, child labor should not be banned completely considering those poor children’s future.

Parents can use their child in family business

You will often see in developing countries that children are helping in their parents work. Take a look at this example of Imran. He helps his farmer father in the field and study hard for his exams. This combination did not hamper his education and believe me he did really well in exams. Moreover, his father is also getting support from trusted hands and earning more bucks. Like this, there are thousands of success stories of working children. I think, banning child labor completely might result in negative impacts on national economy of developing countries.

Owners can reduce the cost of production

Well, it is really unethical to use children as a cheap source of labor. But think about a poor family of five to six members where only earn-able person is the father. Obviously it’s a nightmare situation for them. Now, if the elder son/daughter works in simple jobs for few bucks to support his/her family, then who are we to stop him. Moreover, the owners or producers can save huge amount of cost of production by helping these poor children and their family. So banning child labor completely is not the solution. But the government should make strong laws to prevent the use of children for dangerous jobs.

Working children can help to reduce labor shortage

Labor shortage is a huge problem in some countries. Say for example, in many areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan women are not allowed to work outside. So labor shortage is an obvious situation in those increasingly developing areas. But this problem can be solved if those particular societies give permission to children to work outside. That would not only compensate the shortage of labor but also would help the poor families.

Hope it helps
