Given :- Among the 70 residents in Barangay General P. Santos, 53 liked eating in Restaurant A while 42 liked eating in Restaurant B.

A) How many liked eating both in Restaurant A and Restaurant B ?

B) In Restaurant A only ?

C) In Restaurant B only ?

Solution :-

we know that,

  • n(AUB) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A∩B) .

given that,

  • Total residents in Barangay General P. Santos = n(AUB) = 70
  • Residents like in eating Restaurant A = n(A) = 53 .
  • Residents like in eating Restaurant B = n(B) = 42 .
  • liked eating both in Restaurant A and Restaurant B = n(A∩B)
  • In Restaurant A only = n(A) - n(A∩B) .
  • In Restaurant B only = n(B) - n(A∩B) .

So,

→ n(AUB) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A∩B)

→ n(A∩B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(AUB)

→ n(A∩B) = 53 + 42 - 70

→ n(A∩B) = 95 - 70

→ n(A∩B) = 25 . (Ans. A)

Therefore,

→ In Restaurant A only = n(A) - n(A∩B) = 53 - 25 = 28 .(Ans. B)

→ In Restaurant B only = n(B) - n(A∩B) = 42 - 25 = 17 .(Ans. C)
