Periodic motion:-

  • The motion which repeats itself after regular interval of time in a fixed path is called periodic motion

  • The constant interval of time after which motion is repeated is called time period.

Example :-

  • Motion of planets around Sun.
  • Motion of pendulum.

Oscillatory motion:-

  • When a body moves to and fro about a fixed point, then it's motion is called oscillatory motion.

  • The fixed point about which the body moves is called mean position.

Example:-

  • Motion of Pendulum
  • Motion of wire of guitar.

Knowledge cell:-

  • Is periodic and oscillatory motion same/ synonymous?

Ans:- Every Periodic motion isn't oscillatory motion. But when mechanical energy is conserved every oscillatory motion can be said to be a periodic motion.

  • Simple Harmonic Motion, is it oscillatory?

Ans:- Simple Harmonic Motion is simplist form is oscillatory motion with fixed extreme points. In SHM, total mechanical energy of particle remains constant.
