In a first moment, it was thought that in the instant the tumor volume decreased and, therefore, so did the oxygen demand, those hypoxic cells were capable of getting oxygenated correctly, starting to multiply as they were tumor cells. This was named as the reoxygenation phenomenon. This way, a vicious cycle which seems to be unbreakable would close. This reasoning led to develop several radiotherapy strategies which tried to avoid that new tumor growth after the first radiotherapy fraction.
