The resistance of an object (i.e., a resistor ) depends on its shape and the material of which it is composed.Resistivity ρ is an intrinsic property of a material and directly proportional to the total resistance R, an extrinsic quantity that depends on the length and cross-sectional area of a resistor.

Resistance

It is the property of a conductor to resist the flow of charges through it. Its S.I unit is ohm (Ω).

R = V/I

Where,

  • R = Resistance
  • V = voltage
  • I = current.

Factors on which the resistance of a conductor depends:

  • Resistance depends on its length (L)
  • Resistance depends on its cross sectional area (A)
  • Resistance depends on the nature of material

\sf{R\propto \dfrac{L}{A}}

\sf{R=\rho \dfrac{L}{A}}

  • Where "ρ" (rho) is proportionally constant known as resistivity of the material of conductor.

Resistivity

  • It is the property of the conductor due to which it offers resistance to the flow of current through it .
  • It is measured by the resistance offered by 1m length of wire of that material of area of cross section 1 m2.
  • Resistivity of the material depends only on its material and temperature.
