Displacement gives you the minimum distance possible.

So , in the motion one can change its direction and hence change its velocity as well as distance traversed. So we will have to find time at which its velocity changes and so what we can do is that we will break the question into 2 parts as follows.

ds/dt= 12- 4t = 4(3-t).

So , basically what we can deduce from above is that at time t= 3 the body changes its direction.

Next, we shall find the distance traveled from t = 0 to t= 3 and then from t= 3 till t= 5.

Distance travelled in first interval -

S(0) = 6.

S(3) = 6+ 36 -18 = 24.

Therefore the distance travelled in first interval = 24- 6 = 18.

S(5) = 6+60–50 = 16.

Distance travelled in second interval-

S(5)-S(3) =|16–24| = 8 .

Therefore total distance = 18+8= 26 metres.
