<b>Cigarette smoking accounts for about one-fifth of all deaths from heart disease in the United States. Smokers have a two- to fourfold increase in coronary artery disease and about a 70 percent higher death rate from coronary artery disease than do nonsmokers. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.

People who smoke are two to four times more likely to get heart disease. The risk is even greater for women who smoke and also take birth control pills. Cigarette smoke is also bad for the people around you. Secondhand smoke can cause heart disease and lung cancer in people who don't smoke.
