Independence

A country is considered as Independent when it is free of the foreign rule or any influencing power. Hence, India gained independence from British rule on 15th of august, 1945. But it was not a republic yet

Republic

Republic is a state which is a matter of public and not solely of a ruler. For this a constitution has to be defined according to which power is shared and country is supposed to operate. Hence, the constitution of India was passed in 1950 and India became a republic.
