Each gynoecium contains one or more carpels. In multiple-carpel flowering plants, the gynoecium is described as apocarpous when every carpel is separated and as syncarpous when the carpels are fused. The gynoecium structure plays a vital role in the sexual reproduction of angiosperms.

Gynoecium is a female reproductive part of a flower. The members of gynoecium are called carpels. A gynoecium may consists of one or more carpels. It carries female gametes called ovules. Stigma of gynoecium receives pollen grains and the male gametes reach the ovules. Fusion of male gametes and egg cell in the ovule results in formation of zygote. In future zygote develops into embryo, ovule develops into seed and ovary develops into fruit.
