A motor capacitor, such as a start capacitor or run capacitor (including a dual run capacitor) is an electrical capacitor that alters the current to one or more winding of a single phase AC induction motor to create a rotating magnetic field

Fans use capacitor-run induction motors. Since a fan is expected to be operated just by the flick of a switch, it has to employ a continuous-rating capacitor in series with its auxiliary winding, which stays energizerd as long as the fan runs. The capacitor used is paper type or oil type.

They can be used in charge pump circuitsas the energy storage element in the generation of higher voltages than the input voltage. Capacitors are connected in parallel with the DC power circuits of most electronic devices to smooth current fluctuations for signal or control circuits.
