Shakespeare says that 'rough winds' of the summer season 'shake the darling buds of May'.

The speaker in Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 compares his beloved to a beautiful summer day, but he realises that she is a lot more gentle than the summer season. The winds that blow in the month of May have a roughness about them. They are too strong for the flower buds which are at a delicate stage in life. The poet’s beloved however, is much gentler than the summery winds, for she does not cause any discomfort to any(o)ne.
