The nationwide lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to contain the quickly spreading novel coronavirus is legally based on the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Answer:

The situation is changing rapidly. Please follow the daily situation reports from the World Health Organization (WHO). Updated statistics can be found via Johns Hopkins University or Worldometers.

In late December 2019 people in the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China began to get sick with a type of pneumonia that had not been seen before, marking the beginning of a new infectious disease. This was later discovered to be a new type of coronavirus, a class of virus, that cause a wide variety of illnesses in mammals and birds. Respiratory infections are the most common type of infections caused by coronaviruses in humans. Coronaviruses are responsible for illnesses ranging in severity from the common cold through MERS and SARS in humans.

The International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses selected the name severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to represent that it is a sister of the original SARS virus. The disease the virus causes was named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) and its partners at Candid are tracking philanthropic donations to this outbreak. As of Sept. 2, total donations received stood at more than $13.9 billion. CDP and Candid recently released a report, “Philanthropy and COVID-19 in the First Half of 2020” which outlines the response from philanthropy between January and June. You can also search for COVID-19 grants on the Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy map. All foundations are encouraged to submit their grants to Candid to better track philanthropic giving.

Key Facts

The numbers of cases change quickly and vary depending upon which source you use to track. As of Sept. 4, Worldometers reports the following:

The U.S. case total is 6,352,068, with 191,406 deaths and 3,583,205 recoveries.

As of Sept. 3, the Navajo Nation has reported 9,871 cases and 504 deaths across three states.

The worldwide case total is 26,634,913, with 876,000 deaths and 18,779,749 recoveries.

There are cases in 213 countries.

The countries with the highest cases after the U.S. are Brazil, India, Russia and Peru. Brazil and India both have slightly more than four million cases, although, given that India has a faster rate of increase, it is about to surpass Brazil and take second place.

Impact

It is important when looking at U.S. numbers to dive deeply into trends by states and by cities. New research shows that the U.S. is now seeing more cases daily than it did at the presumed peak of the pandemic a couple of months ago. Over the past several days, the U.S. has averaged 40,000-45,000 daily new cases, a significant drop from the 70,000 new cases per day in July but an increase from the 30,000-40,000 of two weeks ago. On Aug. 11, there were more than 1,500 deaths, the highest number since May, and while the death rate has fluctuated, it is back over 1,000 deaths daily.

California, Texas and Florida are no longer reporting close to 10,000 cases a day, although they all continue to report around 3,000-5,000 new cases daily. Louisiana is 11th overall for cases but first per capita in the country, just ahead of Florida and Mississippi. New York state, once by far the leader, has fallen to seventh per capita and fourth in overall numbers. Deaths are increasing in several states including Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and West Virginia. Look for your state data here to know how your state is faring.

In many communities across the U.S. South, high numbers of African Americans have died from the virus. This is also being reported in majority African American or plurality people of color cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee. Native American and Alaska Native communities are also being hard hit. Toronto, Canada reported that 83% of its cases are composed of people from racialized communities.

The 2020 State of Black America®, Unmasked, “matches the national mood for serious introspection, exposing the human toll and economic devastation of a global pandemic on Black America while laying bare the deep rooted inequities that predated the pandemic and accelerated the virus’s deadly spread.” It highlights some key data points about the way in which the impact of COVID-19 has proven to be discriminatory.
