The earth is known as Geoid because it is flattened at the ends and bulging at the equator.
Geoid:
A hypothetical solid figure whose surface corresponds to mean the sea level and its imagined extension under (or over) land areas.
Who first used the term geoid?
In 1873: J.F.Listing coins the term "Geoid" to describe these mathematical surface.
In 1880:Helmert presents the first full treatise on "physical geodesy".
