Solution :

First number = 16

Second number = ?

Result of their sum = -31

Let the second number be x

According to question:-

⟹ 16 + x = -31

⟹ x = -31 - 16

⟹ x = -47

Therefore, second number = -47

Verification:-

⟹ 16 + (-47) = -31

⟹ 16 - 47 = -31

⟹ -31 = -31

Hence, L.H.S. = R.H.S.

-47 should be added to 16 to get -31.
