 \frac{ - 4}{5}  + x =  \frac{ - 3}{8}

x =  \frac{ - 3}{8}  +  \frac{4}{5}

x =  \frac{(5 \times  - 3) +(4 \times 8) }{40}

x =  \frac{ - 15 + 32}{40}

 =  \frac{17}{40}

so 17/40 should be added to -4/5 to get -3/8
