Let the number added be some 'c'

Then x² + 7x - 35 + c = 0 has one solution = 3

Substituting x = 3 in the above equation,

9 + 21 - 35 + c = 0

c = 5

Hence 5 should be added to the polynomial so that it's zero is 3.
