Tourism potential is immense in India. Our country is a country of diversity of climate, physical features, peoples, ethnicities, religions, languages, cultures, etc. Nearly every region in our vast and varied land has breathtaking natural beauty and enchanting flora and fauna. Tigers and Dolphins, Elephants and Pheasants, majestic Deodar and Orchids all are part of the enchantment of this land. Kaziranga, the wild life sanctuary in Assam, is home of the rare one horned rhino. Arunachal Pradesh had monasteries like Tawang as impressive as Ladakh and like Sikkim which could boast of Pemyengtse and Tashiding attracted a lot of tourists interested in Buddhism.  

Each state and region has its own uniqueness. Foreign and local tourists love this diversity of colour, food, culture, climate, etc. Song and dance and colourful festivals and dazzling handicrafts too cast their spell on tourists both domestic and foreign. Exotic beaches of Goa, backwaters of Kerala, snow-clad mountains of Himachal, sands and lakes of Rajasthan, world heritage sites of Delhi, etc. are the symbols of diversity of our nation.  

This colourful diversity makes our country a major attraction of tourists that is beneficial for the economy and prosperity of the country. We not only have to provide the best of facilities and safety to foreign tourists, but also to maintain a peaceful and amiable coexistence of people belonging to different ethnicities and cultures.  

All the above attractions can be enjoyed at a very nominal rate by the tourists; hence they find visiting India quite thrilling.  

What further can be done to promote tourism in India?

It is absolutely true that many of the European cities attract more tourists than our entire country. We need to promote tourism and eradicate many hindrances. We must promote tourism by opening centers in the advanced countries. These centers should provide information about places of interest to the people and should also offer special packages at the centers.  

We must improve the standard of facilities, safety, hospitality, and other areas related to tourism. There is no denying the fact that India has a huge potential of tourism industry. However, the standard of facilities provided needs to be improved further. We must provide world class facilities to foreign as well as local tourists.  

Special tourism packages, e-visa facilities, better transport, boarding, lodging facilities, etc. will surely attract more tourists.  

The most unpleasant aspect about tourism in India is lack of cleanliness. Owing to poor waste management system in India, the foreign visitors find the rampant littering, uncleanliness quite annoying.  

Some unscrupulous shopkeepers, service-providers, such as transporters, etc. try to fleece the tourists by charging very high rates. Sometimes, the foreigners are assaulted, especially the female tourists. This makes visiting India scary for them.  

The unpleasant aspects should be eliminated to make tourism in India more attractive and thrilling for the foreign visitors.

1. India is an exotic country. It is a country where one can find or discover almost anything that the entire world can iffer. India is a land of beauty, myth, mystery and fascination. India is a country with immense tourism potential. It is already a favourite tourism spot but India still have a long way to go before making its impact felt in the world. India needs to do several things to improve the potential and standing of tourism in the world.
2. India is a favourite spot for tourists for its historical heritage. Places of historical importance must be preserved from damage by nature like erosion or by man.
3. The traditional and cultural diversity of India is beautiful and attracts many tourists. We must do everything possible to promote our cultural diversity from South to North and West to East .
4. The hospitality and hotel industry is still not up to expectation and must be improved.
5. Transport system becomes a headache for tourists visiting India. This must be streamlined for easier access and comfort of visitors. There must be easy access to air, water and land transport. More airlines and tourist buses for places of tourist attraction is needed.
6. The study of foreign languages must be encouraged. People in the tourism industry need to communicate with tourists from countries who cannot speak Hindi. It is important to invest time in learning foreign languages to improve tourism in a long term basis.
7. India is a country which can be compared to a world of its own. Because it is a place where one can find all varieties of landscape from snow-capped mountains to deserts and climatic conditions. India must preserve the gifts of the natural beauty of forests, rivers, lakes, wildfife, etc
8. More academic courses on travel and tourism must be introduced in our educational system so that our youth will be equipped to utilise the tourism potential efficiently. This will reduce unemployment and boost the economy of the country.
9. The scope for tourism in India is vast. If we are sincere about utilising the potentials, it won't be long before we are at the top of the list of tourist attraction in the world.
