Solution :

Let the unknown number be x

 \frac{7}{4}  - x =  - 2 \\  \\  x =  \frac{7}{4}  + 2 \\  \\ x =  \frac{7 + 8}{4}  \\  \\ x =  \frac{15}{4}

So, 15/4 must be subtracted from 7/4 to get -2

Verification :

 \frac{7}{4}  -  \frac{15}{4}  =  - 2 \\  \\   \implies  \frac{7 - 15}{4}  =  - 2 \\  \\  \implies \frac{ - 8}{4}  =  - 2 \\  \\  \implies \:  - 2 =  - 2
