Given :   P ( x ) = 6x⁴ + 5x³ + 4x − 4

To Find : What should be subtracted from the polynomial P ( x )  to make it divisible by 2x² + x − 1

Solution:

                            3x² + x + 1

  2x² + x − 1  _|     6x⁴ + 5x³ + 4x − 4    |_

                             6x⁴ + 3x³  -3x²

                          _________________

                                      2x³  + 3x²  + 4x - 4

                                      2x³  + x²   - x

                                   __________________

                                                 2x²  + 5x - 4

                                                 2x²  + x - 1

                                                 ___________

                                                            4x - 3

Remainder = 4x - 3

Hence 4x - 3  should be subtracted from the polynomial P ( x )  to make it divisible by 2x² + x − 1
