What should readers and writers do so that they can be effective contributors of literature through the aid of technology?
Answers
Explanation:
In modern world, the use of technology is the need of the hour. Although conventional methods are being used, but the efficient way is to use technology and in our case digital technology which includes digital media, online learning platforms, blogs, websites etc. So our writers should use these platforms for promoting their articles and literature. And readers should also try to stay engaged to literary blogs and websites, give suitable feedback to writers
Two types of people can effectively contribute to literature in a substantial way:
1. Creators of literature- authors and poets
2. Consumers- readers
People in each of these categories can use technology to take their contribution to the next level in a number of ways:
For the creators:
1. Finding inspiration- While many famous poets have found inspiration in specific places (like Wordsworth found it in spots of natural abundance), the current pandemic has made stepping out challenging. However, there are many travel videos that one can watch. Additionally, numerous apps can take you on a virtual tour and give you a feel of the place;so geographical limitation is not an obstacle anymore. Similarly, writers who want to focus on locale-specific texts can use the internet to get familiar with and even learn a foreign language.
2. Refining the process of creation- Technology has made it very convenient to write down one’s thoughts and feelings. Handwritten notes can be scanned and changed to text on the computer. Similarly, one can simply speak and typed words appear on the screen. This cuts down the labour involved in manually writing each word down. Additionally, it makes editing easier, without having to rewrite the entire text, as one would traditionally do on a piece of paper. Now, there is a specific niche for digitally published books, meaning that one does not have to get hard copies printed. Digital soft copies can also be published.
3. Sprucing it up- The document can be shared instantaneously with family, friends, peers and professional reviewers, for possible suggestions and improvement before it is finally published.
4. Marketing- Social media can be used effectively to reach out to readers, promote a new book, share snippets or excerpts to give readers a feel of the text and create an interest in the book.
For readers/consumers:
1. Utilise the easy access to literature- With the focus having shifted to digitalisation, readers now have access to many online libraries; some do not even ask for membership fees. The classics in particular are freely available on the internet.
2. Choose a format they enjoy- Technology has helped turn many non-readers into literary fans simply by offering the same text in the audio format as well. So, the end user is not restricted only to the printed text. One can hear works of literature even if one wants to avoid straining one’s eyes on the screens.
3. Connect with other readers- Forming groups on social media and engaging in constructive dialogue, through messages or through video conferencing allows readers to connect with other readers. Such discussions bring forth numerous interpretations and make the literary work even more relevant and popular.
4. Leave reviews and recommendations- When readers leave reviews and recommend texts, it encourages others to try reading the text. This increases the reader base and contributes to literature in a positive way.
It is evident that for literature to survive, both readers and writers also have to play the role of conservers and promoters. Fortunately, technology, in the form of computers, reading devices, tablets and phones is evolving continuously, making it easier to create, share and conserve literature.
