Let x should be added to -5/4 to get -1.

 \frac{ - 5}{4}  + x = 1 \\  \\  x = 1 + \frac{5}{4}  \\  \\ x  = \frac{4 + 5}{4}  \\  \\ x =  \frac{9}{4}
