The following steps were taken by the British to put an end to the Mughal Rule and abolish the title:

a.The name of the Mughal emperor was removed from the coins which were minted by the Company.

b.In 1849, Governor-General Dalhousie also announced that after the death of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the  family of the king would be shifted out of the Red Fort.

c.1856, Governor-General Canning decided that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last Mughal emperor.

d After the death of last Mughal king , death none of his descendants would be recognized as kings and  would be called only princes.
