What sign (+ or -) is given to exothermic reaction ?

By convention, the heat released in a chemical reaction is denoted by negative sign, while the heat absorbed in a reaction is denoted by positive sign. Since in exothermic reactions heat is evolved, therefore negative sign (-) is used to denote endothermic reactions.
