Symbolism. The lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an ancient and polyvalent symbol in Asian culture. Hindus revere it with the gods Vishnu, Brahma and to a lesser degree Kubera, and the goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati . Often used as an example of divine beauty and purity, Vishnu is often described as the "Lotus-Eyed One".

The Lotus is one of the 8 auspicious symbols and is important to Buddhists because it represents simultaneous cause and effect. This is because it contains the seed and the flower at the same time. It also represents the idea that out of the muddiest swamp can come one of the most beautiful things in the world. This is true of human lives as well. According to my humanities teacher, a Buddhism god called Brahma had a lotus flower on his bellybutton, and the earths creator grew out of the lotus flower. Also, Brahma had apparently asked the earths creator to pull the lotus flower apart and use its petals to make the world. the lotus flower is an important symbol to the Buddhist as it shows 'independence, self-regeneration and self-existent.' in paintings and sculptures of the Buddha, he is usually sitting on a lotus flower to show peace as well as being kind, offering help and nice to others.
