Answer:
Building your career can have many different meanings. As a social entrepreneur, I see it as a portfolio of my life's work. It means a lot to me in the weight of accomplishments and successes, but it also simultaneously signifies my contribution to society.
I feel as though my path just started. Still, I can already see how much I’ve learned about building a career.
Here are my three most pressing takeaways:
You can’t succeed without failing
This was the most important and hardest thing to grasp. If you fail in school, it means you didn’t do well, and it represents a lack of learning.
In the real world, if (and when) you fail it means you are surrounded by the biggest opportunity for growth and learning.
Whether your career habits are to play it safe, or take risks… failure is inevitable.
Not every idea you have is going to be good, not every presentation you give is going to go well. But, failing is better than not trying at all. More importantly failing—if you’re paying attention—show’s you how to succeed.
When you’re frozen by the fear of failing, you hinder your growth and movement in your career.
You should accept that failure is inevitable, and approach every situation as a learning opportunity. When you do this, you give yourself the ability to try new things, to think new ways, learn new skills and to always believe that if you’ve failed you aren’t done yet.
Success doesn’t happen to the perfect, it doesn’t happen to people who doesn’t make mistakes, success.. doesn’t happen at all. Success is built from your own bank of knowledge and experience, and if you consider failure as wealth … you will have a very rich bank.
2. You’re never done learning
Whether you’re a recent graduate or a young entrepreneur on the rise, the biggest mistake you can make is letting your ego get in the way of your education.
For some reason society implies that at a certain age you grow up, and that you don’t need to continue to learn. Or that for some reason once you reach a certain age you should stop working on yourself.
That is a huge fallacy.
When you look at the way your business and personal life interact with technology, it clearly demonstrates our perpetual need to master new information.
This concept can be applied across the board.
No matter how many degrees you have, or how successful you are in your career there is always room for growth, and you are never done learning.
3. Have fun trying new things (and have fun being uncomfortable!!)
This was really hard for me, and I continually see myself and my loved ones struggle with it.
Trying to things—especially regarding your career—can be terrifying. And the pro con lists of the “what if’s?” are endless. With so much room for error, it can seem much easier to avoid trying and doing new things.
But when you give yourself the chance to do something new, you give yourself the gift of opportunity.
I truly believe that putting yourself in “uncomfortable” situations is how individuals thrive.
In my experience, all the times where I stepped out of my comfort zone is when things started to click and to take off for me. And I’ve seen the same results time and time again with my friends and family.
It’s extremely difficult, especially at first, but when you get in the habit of getting out of your comfort zone, your life and career will ultimately flourish. You’ll learn faster, and you’ll master new skill sets much more quickly.
If you want to build a successful career do the hard but smart thing, stay out of your comfort zone!
