Explanation:

In an age where we are constantly surrounded by people whether physically or virtually, it can be hard to find a moment of silence. As a result, the value of silence is often underrated in our society today. Here’s my two cents on what silence can teach us:

1. Silence teaches us self-control. It is easy to have an emotional outburst when one is angry or sad. But this is often very hurtful to those around us as we may say things we don’t mean in the heat of the moment. Training oneself to stay silent allows one to calm down and re-examine one’s own thoughts to make more rational decisions and to avoid unnecessary conflicts with those around us, which achieve nothing but spreading unhappiness and leading to strained relationships.

2. Silence teaches us concentration. Meditation is one such activity where we train ourselves to silence our minds. This is a useful skill as it helps us to achieve mastery over our thoughts and allows us to channel our energy and focus to a specific activity at will. This exercise also prolongs our attention span, which sadly, for many of us as been eroded by the multitude of technological distractions which we constantly surround ourselves with. It takes a lot of self-discipline to finish a meditation session successfully.

3. Silence teaches us empathy and understanding. Silence is often associated with oppression; an inability to express one’s thoughts freely or to speak against ideologies long regarded as the norm in society. For instance, there are many women, particularly in Asian patriarchal societies who continue to be regarded as the lesser gender, being told that their place is in the house. What they should wear, when they should go out, when they can speak , etc. continues to be decided by the men of the household. Similarly, there are many minority groups living with no voice in their own country, such as the Uighurs in China. Travelling and spending a day silently observing the lives of these individuals teaches us empathy towards the circumstances of other human beings who may not be as fortunate as us. When we listen more and talk less, we are exposed to the viewpoints of other individuals and this broadens our horizons.

4. Silence teaches us to develop independent thinking. When we are alone with our own thoughts, in the absence of other people and media we are more able to separate our original thoughts from those of others. Silence allows us to ‘hear’ our inner personal voice without being swayed by the thoughts of others. We are liberated and our mind can wander wherever it wishes to. This fosters brilliant creativity which may not be possible when we are surrounded by others. This silence and solitude is highly valued by introverts as it is the way in which we get into a state of flow and can fully focus on our work without having to be self conscious.

5. Silence allows you to truly appreciate the things around you. You can only fully appreciate a great piece of music, an artwork, or a well –written book if there aren’t a dozen other distractions, especially noisy ones, competing for your attention. Silence allows you to devote your undivided attention to the object at hand.
