Explanation:

When his teacher Hamel asked him to read French, he did not like it. He did not want to go to school and follow principles. He wanted to look at natural sceneries and birds.

Hamel insisted everyone read French and preserve their mother tongue. Prussian soldiers captured his town and made it compulsory for the schools to teach the German language. On Hamel's last day, Franz realizes his mistake of not learning his mother tongue yet.
