Or he was,
Robert Clive was a privateer and the first governor general of India and head of EAST India company. He established British rule over a huge swath of se asia and convinced the French after a couple of battles to leave India to them. He established British authority by overthrowing the ruler of the Bengal state which was richer than England. Argueably he caused several famines because of his taxes and other confiscations he put in to place. And he did all this as a person working for East India Company only and not the British government. He was in short a high handed individual. He and Hastings were 2 principal figures in early India.
