Correct answer: Myelin sheath and nodes of Ranvier

The nerve impulse is sped up by the myelin sheath and nodes of Ranvier. It is a sheath of a fatty substance called as myelin, it acts as an electrical insulator and through it, the nerve impulse travels 20 times faster.

Nodes of Ranvier is a small gap that is found between the myelinated segments where axon is exposed and it is known to increase the speed of impulse by jumping from node to node.

In multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheath around the axon breaks down and as a result of that nerve are not able to carry information between the brain and body efficiently.
