The United Arab Emirates is one of the world's top water scarcity nation. But the nation has one of the highest water consumption per person in the world of 550 liters per day. The nation is undergoing a dramatic population increase which has led to enormous water demand.

Explanation:

A further major factor in the slow progress of water management initiatives is water misuse. One form of misuse  is irrigation by spray irrigation of the garden or landscape by household. Some of the urgently needed steps to promote water preservation in households

  1. Implementation of a new water meter-based tariff system.
  2. Water Conservation Mass Awareness Measures.
  3. Implementation of new irrigation technologies, like "sub-surface drip irrigation".
  4. Provision of clean drinking water via taps

Two-thirds of all water consumption in the Emirates is used for agriculture. Rapid population growth led to a rise in food demand and a greater burden on water supplies. Low irrigation efficiency is one of the biggest contributors to wastage of water in agriculture. Measures that can be adopted to conserve water are

  • Introducing new irrigation techniques which have better efficacy, such as drip irrigation, that utilise 35 per cent less water than traditional systems.
  • The country must shift from water-intensive crops & must also try using  wastewater for the purpose of irrigation.
  • Moving to less water-intensive crops and improving irrigation methods will minimize the quantity of water required in this area significantly.

Industries consume approximately 9 per centof the entire country's water consumption. Most of the water is used to cool and clean machine impurities that are then transformed into rivers that pollute the surrounding areas. The created wastewater is not lost and can be irrigated. The government can take steps into utilising industrial wastewater
